We’re Finally Here!September 17, 2017
Back in my day, “inline skates” (a.k.a. roller blades) hadn’t been invented yet. So if a gal wanted to skate, she would put on her 4-wheeled numbers with the rubber stopper on the toe and hope for the best [said a quick prayer to the roller skating gods] that the stopper actually stopped her! During the days of 4-wheels we didn’t have helmets, knee pads, wrist guards or elbow pads. We just laced up our skates and hit the road. And unless we went to a roller rink, we literally “hit the road,” although as you can imagine, sidewalks and asphalt weren’t the best places to skate, but that didn’t stop us.
The only time it actually stopped me is when I really got up some speed, hit a bump and broke my arm. (I have a picture of me at 7 years old in my arm cast with my kitty by my side.) Now, you think that would have deterred me from ever skating again, not even a little. I may even have skated with my cast on. I was a tomboy then and still am today!
When rollerblades came along, the 4-rollers took a backseat for the newer shinier version for a while but they are now the new and trendy thing to do! It’s kind of a throw-back to the 70s, and people are not only skating again, but they are bringing back the clothing style to accompany the nostalgia. Yay!
Aside from this being the latest trend, there are many health benefits to roller skating, if you’re careful enough not to break your arm, of course. Did you know that just one hour of roller skating can burn 600 calories and by the way is WAY more fun than going to the gym!
So what are you gals waiting for? Get together, throw on your roller skates and have a crazy everyday adventure. You can also personalize your own own roller skates at home like Meeks and I did. You can check it out on paigehemmis.com
